Game Changer # 2: Amphitheater
The Big Idea
An amphitheater was repeatedly identified by community stakeholders as an infrastructure investment that would greatly improve the appeal of the Bismarck riverfront. Outdoor amphitheaters with natural backdrops are seen throughout the country, creating a unique entertainment option with regional appeal. Traveling performing acts and regional promoters have very specific venue requirements for outdoor and amphitheater locations they will visit. An amphitheater custom tailored to entertainment industry specifications would create the setting required. Additionally, Bismarck’s central location between Moorhead’s Bluestem Amphitheater and Montana’s Kettlehouse Amphitheater would make Bismarck a natural stopping point for regional touring acts. This unique amenity would add to area tourism offerings and increase regional tourism dollars spent in Bismarck.
Existing Site Conditions
The site proposed for the amphitheater is immediately southwest of the MDU Resources Community Bowl. The land is privately owned by an individual that may support a community based use, such as this, for a portion of the site. This location features a stunning backdrop of the Missouri River and the historic railroad bridge. The site is well suited for an amphitheater. However, the western orientation would require some unique design considerations.
Proposed Site Conditions
The hillside offers topography and dimensions well suited for an amphitheater. The proximity to existing parking at BSC would allow for a cooperative parking arrangement that reduces overall infrastructure costs. An existing roadbed from Edwards Avenue to River Road could be developed as a circulation route for equipment drop-off and staging. Cooperative site planning with the existing land owner would be necessary to ensure co-existence among the multiple facilities that may develop in this area.
